About Gravy / Sauce Boats:
The gravy boat, or sauce boat, originated in 17th-century France as a stylish vessel designed to serve lighter, complex sauces from the royal court. Originally made of silver or earthenware, the design migrated to England in the 1700s and was later popularized worldwide in fine porcelain and ceramic dinner sets. In early period records, many antiques that we now call “gravy boats” were actually referred to as “butter boats”. This is because the popular table sauce of the era was a variation of warm, melted butter or hollandaise, rather than the rich, thickened meat drippings we associate with gravy today.
