Atlantis Crystal
The first crystal pieces from the prestigious firm Atlantis were made in the town of Alcobaça, Portugal, in 1972. At the time, the factory was known as Crisal (Alcobaça Crystals) and devoted its production to old Portuguese lead crystal. Founded in 1944, Alcobaça Crystals manufactured chandeliers, sconces, glass for domestic use and other beautiful pieces. Later, in the early 1970s, it began to produce high-quality handmade glass with the help of molds and blow rods, following the old practices of knowledgeable and experienced craftsmen. Atlantis crystal stands out for its beauty, weight, brilliance, transparency and durability, and their pieces are coveted around the world by those who seek the best glasswork. The brand’s luxurious products are executed with great skill—using sand, lead oxide, sodium, potassium and borax, among other materials. It is a painstakingly stressful process with temperatures that can reach up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The experienced artisans use tools and molds made of wood, aluminum or steel to shape their beautiful pieces. The factory produces a wide range of pieces ranging from bottles, cups, jars and plates too centerpieces, bowls, and vases. The experience and know-how of the craftsmen determine the thickness of each piece, which varies depending on the force of the blow used to create them.Atlantis is known for its tight quality control. With perfection as their emblem, thousands of pieces are discarded, many with flaws so imperceptible to the human eye that can only be detected by trained experts. On the other hand, faithful to the most beautiful designs and following the latest artistic trends, Atlantis develops contemporary, sophisticated and versatile pieces in collaboration with renowned Portuguese and international designers. Their excellent reputation and the high quality of its production, have inspired the leading names in crystal—Waterford Crystal, Baccarat, and Saint Louis—to commission pieces with the highest standards of quality and functionality.

After its recent merger with the Portuguese Vista Alegre Group, Atlantis is still present in major international markets in more than 20 countries. The brand is recognized as the manufacturer of some of the purest crystal in the world, where the artisan tradition continues to flirt with the best contemporary design. Today the firm’s factory at Alcobaça has more than 500 workers and continues to expand its international presence for costumers that adore a crystal that is as extraordinary as it is sublime and beautiful

Coimbra Ceramics
Coimbra ceramics has existed since the 16th century and includes ceramics that traditionally use cobalt blue in monochrome tones but also yellow, green and ochre. This art, characteristic of this city in Northern Portugal, has been recognized throughout the world for several centuries. During the 16th century, the “Malegueiros”, so-called because they originated from the city of Malaga in Spain, were the first artists to introduce the ceramic technique in the Coimbra region. With their privilege, the Malegoiros quickly amassed fortunes, acquired titles of nobility and prospered. In 1886, 11 ceramic factories were working in Coimbra — and in the 2000s, the ESTACO factory had more than 1,000 employees not counting its production unit in Mozambique.

Today, Coimbra ceramics remains very present in the collective imagination and arouses attention, respect and curiosity. Very rare, 16th, 17th and 18th-century pieces are part of private collections and are in great demand at auctions. This is an opportunity for a few talented craftsmen to rediscover the ancestral manufacturing processes and to produce again the historical pieces of Coimbra ceramics.

Kramer Jewelry
When someone mentions vintage costume jewelry, probably what comes to mind for many of us are the fabulous rhinestone laden pieces of the 1950s. One of the foremost names in this classic jewelry style was Kramer. Louis Kramer founded Kramer Jewelry Creations, Inc. in 1943. His two brothers Harry and Morris arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and ran the business aspects of the company allowing Louis to concentrate on jewelry design At a time when many costume jewelry manufacturers were located in Providence, Rhode Island, the company made their home in New York City. While they designed all of their pieces, frequently the actual manufacture was jobbed out to other companies such as Delizza & Elster. The company was best known for their parures (sets) and demi parures of high-quality rhinestones, usually Austrian. Other materials such as art glass were sometimes incorporated into the designs. They also designed jewelry for other companies, most notably Dior in the 1950s and 60s and Geoffrey Beene in the 1970s. In addition to their classic pieces, another style they made famous was their fabulous floral brooches in rhinestones and/or enamel. In the construction of the jewelry, the rhinestones were usually prong-set. The backs of earlier pieces were either plated with gold or rhodium which is a shiny silver-colored metal. Later pieces in the 60s and 70s had textured backs rather than smooth.

Monet Jewelry
Have you ever looked at a piece of jewelry, and saw a nice, glittery part that you thought for sure was gold? Well, this is not always the case. Sometimes, it may just look expensive – but in truth, it is only made under a skilled brand. One such example is the Monet jewelry brand. In the world of vintage jewelry, Monet jewelry was made to look high-end and expensive – but without actually bearing the high price. After the war, even with the Great Depression breathing down people’s necks, people still wanted to look their best – to wear the right kinds of accessories that would make them stand out. In response to their desires, Monet often featured faux gemstones such as glass – and rather than going for full gold or silver pieces, they went for the plated type. For all intents and purposes, the resulting piece of jewelry looked like the real deal. In the end, people were able to wear their “expensive” jewelry, but without having to dig too much in their budget for it. However, the final pieces looked very stylish, which is why Monet gained quite a loyal fan base after that. Today, Monet pieces are deeply appreciated as vintage jewelry, collected and worn on a variety of occasions. You may find embellished designs that can go fabulously on a special event, or you may go for a more minimalist piece that you can wear on a daily basis.

Waterford Crystal
The name Waterford is synonymous with quality. Created by hand in the city of Waterford, Ireland more than 200 years ago, this well-crafted glassware appeared in the homes of the well-to-do families throughout Europe, and even gained the admiration of the British royal family. Waterford Crystal pieces are valuable because they contain very intricate design elements, and the process to create them is both complex and labor intensive. The larger the piece, the more detail it includes, and the more expensive it is. Today Waterford crystal is still hand cut and produced with an incredibly exacting attention to craftsmanship, and the stemware remains a highly coveted and collectible brand.
