Description
This playful bombay-style “monkey riding an elephant” decorative plate will be such a fun — yet very nice — addition to your home decor. Whether it is hung on a wall (it would look stellar in a bar area) or positioned atop a coffee table, this handpainted plate will look amazing with its black and cream geometric lip border (with gilted highlights / edges) which complement the main scene. The smiling monkey is riding the dressed up elephant — with a gold-embellished nettipattam (head covering) — in a sandy desert with palm trees. This octagonal plate has a matte black back side and is quite heavy, so I suspect it is handpainted over pewter or other heavy material. This little treasure was found hidden in an antique booth in NE Mississippi surrounded by fine Asian furniture and other decorative wares.

Did you know?
In the Indian state of Kerala, elephants are decorated during temple festivals. They wear a distinctive golden head covering called a nettipattam, which is often translated into English as an elephant caparison. However, it covers only the head, not the body, as in a horse caparison.
Also, elephants symbolize luck and prosperity.
