About Cabbage Ware
This style of pottery was created by Dodie Thayer, a Palm Beach resident and local artisan. Known as the “Pottery Queen of Palm Beach,” Thayer modestly began her hobby in the 1960s, teaching herself how to mold clay from lettuce and cabbage leaves. She made each piece of her lettuce ware in all of its green ruffled glory by hand in her home workshop. In its salad days, Thayer’s quirky lettuce ware was an entertaining must-have for Frank Sinatra, Jackie O and other A-list celebrities. Today it demands top dollar at auction. Many pottery companies followed the trend, creating a look that is as chic now as it was at it’s inception.
